Moon Drone
The Moon Drone was composed for a sound installation at Various Small Fires in LA for The Metabolic Studio accompanying the Portable Wetland for Southern California, a sculpture that captures and cleanses LA River water and rain water with artificial wetlands and spreads it on reclaimed soil to support the life web. The piece is made from three different tones representing the orbits of the Earth, Sun, and Moon derived using Swiss mathematician and musicologist Hans Cousto’s 1978 Cosmic Octave formula. With C# representing the Earth, G# representing the Moon, and B representing the Sun, each tone was lathe cut into polycarbonate disc. Utilizing a lock-groove technique, the three tones play together, moving perpetually in and out of sync with one another reflecting the ways that the Earth, Sun, and Moon travel throughout our solar system. The Moon Drone is currently being played at the Metabolic Studio’s Undevelopment 1 site which is also called “The Moon”.
